Border Reivers paid for their handling errors as their Heineken Cup campaign ended in defeat in Italy.
Two Arthur Little tries - one a 90-yard interception - and a penalty try wiped out Borders' brief early lead as Parma romped to a 22-6 half-time lead.
Tries by John Dalziel, Nick De Luca and a penalty try lifted the Scots' hopes.
But Alejandro Canale's boot, another Parma penalty try and a touchdown by Nicola Mazzucato meant Opeta Palepoi's late effort was all in vain.
After Calum MacRae kicked Reivers into an early lead, Little soon went over twice.
First he got on the end of a chip through, and the second was a length-of-the-pitch dash after intercepting a pass by Gregor Townsend, playing his final European game.
A penalty try for twisting the scrum just added to Reivers woes, and they needed to respond well after the break to have any chance of salvaging victory.
With the home side down to 14 men, Rob Chrystie's tap-penalty set up Dalziel to score before de Luca added another, both converted by MacRae.
The sides traded penalties and penalty tries before substitute Mazzucato and Palepoi rounded off the try scoring.
Borders coach Steve Bates:
"The killer blow was the interception try we gave them towards the end of the first half.
"They had already scored two touchdowns they didn't have to work for, so it was entirely our own fault that we were in a precarious position at that stage.
"At half-time we discussed the fact that we had not envisaged the match going like this.
"It was hugely disappointing to throw it all away in the end by giving them too many opportunities."
