Bath hit by shoulder surgery for fly-half Butch James

Bath fly-half Butch James has undergone shoulder surgery and will be out of action until November.

The South African was injured during the Springboks' Tri-Nations clash against Australia last month.

The 31-year-old, who has earned 35 caps for his country, has not featured in either of Bath's two Premiership victories this season.

Bath assistant coach Brad Davis told BBC Bristol: "It's a blow because he's a quality player and a quality person."

Davis added: "Having said that, Sam [Vestey] has come in and had the whole pre-season with us, has got to know the players and fitted in pretty seamlessly.

"We have to give Butch the best possible care and get him as fit as possible and get him a return date that we can all look forward to.

"In the meantime we crack on and try to get as many wins as possible."
