Injured Horgan in Ireland squad
Shane Horgan
Shane Horgan may miss some of Ireland's pool matches
Shane Horgan has been included in Ireland's 30-strong World Cup squad even though he may miss some pool matches because of a knee injury.

Horgan twisted his knee in the warm-up before Saturday's match with Scotland.

Former rugby league star Brian Carney has been named as a winger ahead of Ulster's Tommy Bowe who is on stand-by in case the Horgan situation changes.

Trevor Hogan, Mick O'Driscoll, Keith Gleeson and Jamie Heaslip have missed out on places in the forwards.

Leinster back Horgan will be given until Ireland's second Pool D clash against Georgia on 15 September to prove his fitness.

He went for an MRI scan on Sunday morning which revealed a grade two ligament tear.

Bowe will travel with the 30-strong squad to France and if Horgan fails to recover in time to face Georgia, the Ulster winger will be drafted in as his replacement for the remainder of tournament.

"Shane's injury means a four-week lay-off, depending on his healing powers," said Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan.

"That puts him in with a chance of making the second Pool game against Georgia.

"Whether he makes that deadline we have set him is another matter but we are giving him every chance."

Horgan's inclusion means just one place remained open in the back three and O'Sullivan opted for Munster's Carney over Bowe.

Both wingers featured in the warm-up game at Murrayfield and Carney, who converted from rugby league five months ago, obviously impressed O'Sullivan most.

After settling on a 16-14 split between forwards and three-quarters, another concern for O'Sullivan was how to divide the back and second rows.

Alan Quinlan's ability to cover both departments has earned him the nod with three locks, Paul O'Connell, Malcolm O'Kelly and Donncha O'Callaghan included.

Ireland squad - forwards: N Best, R Best, S Best, S Easterby, S Ferris, J Flannery, J Hayes, M Horan, D Leamy, D O'Callaghan, P O'Connell, M O'Kelly, A Quinlan, F Sheahan, D Wallace, B Young.

Backs: I Boss, B Carney, G D'Arcy, G Dempsey, G Duffy, D Hickie, S Horgan, G Murphy, B O'Driscoll (cpt), R O'Gara, E Reddan, P Stringer, A Trimble, P Wallace.
