Leinster lost on their first visit to Thomond Park in 11 years as Munster muscled their way to a Magners League derby victory on Wednesday.

A penalty try helped Munster into an early lead but Leinster hit back with a classy Girvan Dempsey touchdown.

Jonathan Sexton's penalty edged Leinster 11-10 ahead at half-time but Munster took control after the break.

Man-of-the-match Ronan O'Gara kicked over five penalties from five attempts as the Munster forwards dominated.

With Felipe Contepomi still not fully fit after a knee injury there was a Magners League debut for Leinster fly-half Jonathan Sexton.

Sexton made an impact within five minutes by kicking over a penalty to give the visitors the lead.

Munster responded with a period of concerted pressure which led to a yellow card for Leinster flanker Keith Gleeson for coming round on the wrong side.

The pressure also resulted in a converted penalty try on 13 minutes after Leinster collapsed the scrum close to the line.

But 14-man Leinster produced a classy move seven minutes later which ended with Dempsey going over in the corner.

O'Gara put Munster 10-8 ahead with a penalty but it was Leinster who went in ahead at the break.

Munster flanker Frankie Sheahan was sin-binned for a professional foul in added time and Sexton converted the resulting penalty.

O'Gara restored Munster's lead with a 43rd minute penalty and added a further two after Sexton pushed a long-range opportunity wide of the posts.

Munster grew in dominance as the second period progressed with their forwards putting on the pressure and forcing mistakes.

Leinster threw on Contepomi in an attempt to turn the tide of the game but the effect was minimal.

Munster pushed to the very end and O'Gara kicked over two more penalties to complete a faultless kicking display and a comfortable win for his team.
