Tries from Jamie Heaslip and Girvan Dempsey helped Leinster beat battling Connacht in Saturday's Celtic League clash in Galway.

David Slemen hit two penalties and a drop-goal to help Connacht lead 9-3 but Heaslip's try enabled the visitors to take a five-point lead at the break.

Felipe Contepomi's penalty extended the Leinster lead and Dempsey's 47th minute try proved the last score of the match.

Connacht produced some late pressure but the Leinster defence held firm.

The home side played some of the best rugby of their home Celtic League campaign in the first 20 minutes and were more than worthy of their 9-3 lead.

Connacht were on top in the scrum and lineout at that stage and their pressure was rewarded by Slemen's nine points although Contepomi also notched a Leinster penalty.

But Leinster gradually gained the upperhand and they made their dominance count as they rattled up 18 points either side of half-time to swing the game firmly their way.

Contepomi's penalty on 40 minutes narrowed the gap to three and Leinster notched their opening try straight from the kick-off.

Shane Horgan broke from his 22 and ran almost the length of the pitch before feeding Rob Kearney who sent Heaslip over for the game's opening try.

Seven minutes after half-time, following another Contepomi penalty, Leinster produced one of the few good moves of the game from a scrum and sent Dempsey over in the corner for the final score of the match.

The home side had one good chance on 65 minutes when they bombarded the Leinster line with a series of half-breaks but a stamping offence ended the attack and any hope of a comeback.

Connacht have now suffered eight defeats in their nine Celtic League games while Leinster have won five of their eight matches.
