Ulster scored five tries as they beat Connacht 36-10 at Ravenhill to go back to the top of the Celtic League.

Four of them came in the first half as Matt McCullough, Rory Best, James Topping and Andrew Trimble scored to see Ulster lead 29-3 at half-time.

There was no addition to the score for 33 minutes in the second half but then Isaac Boss sent speedster Tommy Bowe clear for a try.

Keith Matthews broke away for a late try for Connacht.

Ulster opened the scoring after eight minutes when McCullough was driven over after a Roger Wilson break from a scrum and David Humphreys converted.

Connacht got on the board with a Paul Warwick penalty but Ulster underlined their superiority on 17 minutes with the alert Best snatching the home side's second score, diving on the ball after a line-out steal by the visitors.

Four minutes before the half-hour, Humphreys side-stepped through the Connacht cover to set up Topping for the third try.

Humphreys' conversion made it 19-3 to Ulster but then, three minutes later, the Ulster out half was sent to the bin by referee Alain Rolland for a deliberate knock on.

However, Connacht's advantage was undone when hooker John Fogarty was also binned two minutes later for interfering with the ball as Ulster piled on the pressure. Bryn Cunningham added the penalty from Fogarty's misdemeanour.

Ulster's bonus-point try arrived on 36 minutes when Trimble sped away and Cunningham added the two points.

Ulster's new signing Boss come on for his debut and set up Bowe for Ulster's final try before Connacht got a consolation try right at the death when Matthews ran in an intercept score.
