John Beattie could win his first full international cap

Glasgow Warriors number eight John Beattie has been called up to the Scotland squad for the tour of South Africa as cover for Ally Hogg.

Hogg suffered a hamstring injury in the recent win over the Barbarians, though it is hoped he will be fit to play South Africa later in the month.

"Ally ran this morning and is making progress," coach Frank Hadden said.

"In any event, John's involvement on the South African tour is a fantastic development opportunity for him."

Beattie has pulled out of the under-21 side due to take part in the world championships in France, though Hadden added: "We hope events mean that John will still be able to play some part in that tournament.

Beattie, the son of the former Scotland and Lions number eight of the same name, is also hoping his call-up will offer the chance of representing his country at both levels.

"It's a win-win situation for me. Being called up as cover for South Africa is going to be an awesome experience," he said.

"All being well with injuries, it'll be fantastic if I can finish off with the under-21s given that I've been playing with many of the guys in the squad since I was 17."
