Dale McDermott, the video analyst who exposed South Africa's infamous pre-World Cup Kamp Staaldraad training camp, has been found dead in Durban.
McDermott, who worked under former SA coach Rudolf Straeuli for two years, is thought to have committed suicide.
The 35-year-old died of a single gunshot wound to the head.
Images released by McDermott showed players being forced naked into a freezing lake to pump up rugby balls and crawling naked through mud.
Newspapers have reported that a suicide note was found at the scene and police say that no foul play is suspected.
McDermott also worked under present South Africa coach Jake White with the Under-21 side.
"Dale was a really special friend of mine," said White.
"I have known his whole family for a long time and I know that he is going to be really missed by a lot of guys."
