Lions player ratings
How did the Lions rate in their defeat to NZ Maori?

Josh Lewsey: Another big game in defence and solid under the high ball. A try-saving tackle on Rico Gear but little chance to impress going forward.

Tom Shanklin: Produced little of note save a glimpse of a counter attack early on. Defensively firm though rounded too easily by superior pace.

Brian O'Driscoll: Scored a late try but otherwise subdued and squandered possession with wayward kicking. Midfield defence solid, barring one Maori break early on, though he was impeded.

Gordon D'Arcy: Strong in defence with O'Driscoll but another one with little chance to stake a Test claim. Indiscipline cost two penalties.

Shane Williams: Dancing feet often took him past the first tackler but much effort for little reward. Spilled a couple of balls as he looked for work.

Stephen Jones: Missed one kick at goal but otherwise solid. Made one half break but under sustained Maori pressure. Defence laudable.

Matt Dawson: Impudent break early on sparked Lions' first penalty. Eager and dynamic but needs to use experience to full effect.

Andrew Sheridan: Took on probable All Blacks prop Carl Hayman admirably before a sin-binning for a punch. Linked well with fellow tight five.

Steve Thompson: Impressive physically but throwing again suspect, though not helped by inspired display from NZ Maori lock Sean Hohneck.

Julian White: Strong scrummaging, though penalised for angling in on his opposite number early on. Moments of note in the loose.

Simon Shaw: Prominent in open play and plenty of tackles under his belt. Handling suspect occasionally but still in the reckoning.

Paul O'Connell: Mixed day in the line-out - some good steals but often out-jumped. Aggressive and a nuisance going forward.

Richard Hill: A quiet game from the England star. Got through his work without inspiring those around him, particularly at the breakdown.

Martyn Williams: Out-gunned by opposite number Marty Holah. Ineffectual at the breakdown and penalised too often to help his side's cause.

Michael Owen: Made great strides towards a Test berth against Taranaki but failed to impress against a fired-up Maori back-row.

Replacements:

Gethin Jenkins (Replaced Sheridan on 58 mins): Brought on after Sheridan's sin-binning but not quite as much grunt as the England man.

Shane Byrne (Replaced Thompson on 72 mins): More reliable then Thompson at the line-out but lacks his presence.

Ronan O'Gara (Blood replacement for Jones):
No mistakes in brief appearance after standing in for Jones, who collided with a Maori shoulder.

Shane Horgan (Blood replacement for D'Arcy):
Little time to impress or ruin chances.
