England are in danger of being on the receiving end of a rout as Jeremy Paul romps in for another try. The score comes from an England spilled ball as Australia ignite at the merest sniff of a chance.

62 mins: England waste a good attacking position with a line-out infringement and Australia pump the ball into touch to compound the lack of discipline of the men in white.

Joe Worsley limps off and Martin Corry comes on but Australia's Joe Roff scythes through the England backs to put Jeremy Paul in for another try under the posts. Roff converts.

A wayward pass from Lawrence Dallaglio gives Australia a sniff of possession and the gold backs race down the right wing. Clyde Rathbone chips on and hares forward to touch down for the try. Joe Roff misses the conversion.

50 mins: England full-back Josh Lewsey launches a searing break from the re-start and the white hordes set up camp in Australia's 22.

England surge forward from a quick tap-penalty by Matt Dawson and skipper Lawrence Dallaglio takes the pass from Charlie Hodgson to crash in under the posts. Hodgson converts.

46 mins: Matt Dawson replaces Andy Gomarsall at scrum-half for England.

44 mins: PENALTY Australia 24-8 England
A small off-the-ball rumpus allows Australia's backs space to carve through England. But Steve Thompson takes out George Gregan illegally and Joe Roff stretches the lead.

42 mins: Olly Barkley sparks an impressive England opening to the second half but Steve Thompson knocks-on to derail the attack.

41 mins: England bring on Olly Barkley for Mike Catt in the centre and Steve Thompson for Mark Regan at hooker.


40 mins: TRY Australia 21-8 England
Stephen Larkham and Joe Roff combine well to feed Clyde Rathbone for his second try as England's backs are once again stretched. Roff misses the conversion from wide right.

39 mins: England's front row win an important decison when they wheel a scrum and then induce Australia to collapse the scrum, earning white a penalty. But they squander the chance when they are late to a line-out and Australia win another penalty.

37 mins: England's Josh Lewsey tackles Australia's Lote Tuqiri without the ball and the Wallabies are awarded a penalty wide on the left which they they opt to kick into touch.

33 mins: Australia's line-out is not straight and England are able to press forward again from the free-kick. Australia knock-on but England infringe and a free-kick goes the other way.

29 mins: TRY Australia 16-8 England
England full-back Josh Lewsey sparks a prolonged period of pressure in Australia's half but the Wallabies defend stoutly before Richard Hill rumbles over for England's first try. Charlie Hodgson misses the conversion from the left touchline.

25 mins: Another penalty to Australia as England ruin a promising break down the left when Ben Cohen holds onto the ball in a tackle.

24 mins: England are pinged for another penalty as Simon Shaw is deemed to have tackled Brendan Cannon high, though the Australian ducked into the challenge. Cannon has to go off and Jeremy Paul comes on at hooker for Australia.

20 mins: PENALTY Australia 16-3 England
England infringe again and Joe Roff knocks over another three points.

18 mins: TRY Australia 13-3 England
Australia take quick ball off the top of a line-out and Lote Tuqiri makes a stunning break up the middle before feeding winger Clyde Rathbone, who races into the corner. Joe Roff converts.

15 mins: Referee Paddy O'Brien gives both front rows a stern talking to and then promptly gives a free-kick against Australia for delaying the put-in. England break out through Tom Voyce and Simon Shaw but Australia snuff out the threat as England prop Julian White gets in the way.

11 mins: PENALTY Australia 6-3 England
England's Charlie Hodgson dinks over the top and is impeded as he chases through. England recycle but the final pass goes to Australian hands. But Joe Roff spills the ball and England are eventually awarded a penalty in front of the posts, which Hodgson slots.

10 mins: Australia's Joe Roff hangs onto the ball in a tackle and England are awarded a chance to pump the ball into touch on the right.

8 mins: PENALTY Australia 6-0 England
England infringe at the line-out and Joe Roff strikes his second three-pointer.

6 mins: England edge forward and enjoy some possesion in Australia's half. But the play lacks incision and drifts from side to side. Mike Catt's chip over the top goes straight to Joe Roff, who clears his lines with ease.

3 mins: PENALTY Australia 3-0 England
Australia win their first penalty as Andy Gomarsall finds himself under presure and offloads to Josh Lewsey, who hangs on in the tackle. Joe Roff converts the chance.

2 mins: The early exchanges are even as play flows either side of the halfway line.

1015: Stephen Larkham kicks off for Australia, who knock-on, prompting the first scrum.

1013: Australia's anthem booms out, followed by Waltzing Matilda.

0950: A capacity crowd are gathering in the Suncorp Stadium ahead of the much-anticipated clash. A sea of gold is punctuated here and there with pockets of white and red and the ubiquitous St George's cross.
