The Royal Bank of Scotland has become the new sponsor for the Six Nations Championship.

The company takes over from Lloyds TSB, who paid around 30m to sponsor the championship for the last five years.

The new deal will run until 2005, with the 2003 tournament beginning on 15 February

Negotiations for a new television contract were only concluded with the BBC two months ago.

"We are delighted that the Championship is to be sponsored by The Royal Bank of Scotland," said Jacques Laurans, the chairman of the Six Nations committee.

"We look forward to working together and to ensuring that this sponsorship brings great benefit to sponsor and rugby alike."
