Woodward questions Lomu tries
England coach Clive Woodward
Woodward has called for a clarification of the rules
England coach Clive Woodward has questioned the legitimacy of Jonah Lomu's two tries during Saturday's Test against New Zealand.

England triumphed 31-28 at Twickenham but had to survive a late onslaught from the All Blacks that was led by Lomu's second score of the game.

And Woodward, using video and computer graphics in a presentation to reporters on Tuesday, claims both of the winger's tries involved decoy runners illegally getting in the way of English defenders.

I think it has to be absolutely clear because it is a key part of the game
Clive Woodward

"There is not a referee I have shown this to who has said it is allowed," he said.

"It is very hard to referee at full speed. This time it was done so well and at such pace that we were caught out."

Woodward said it did not bother him if rugby authorities decided to ban the use of decoy runners or not.

But the England coach said the matter needed to be clarified before the World Cup started next October.

"I don't mind which way it goes," he said. "I'd play either system. I've got my own views about it.

"I am happy to coach either way, but I think it has to be absolutely clear because it is a key part of the game.

"We don't want to have this discussion in 12 months' time."
