Scotland A overcome Romania
Calvin Howarth in action for Glasgow
Calvin Howarth's contribution was crucial for Scotland
Scotland A 21-18 Romania A

Calvin Howarth made an eventful Scotland debut as the home side overcame a spirited Romania A at Rubislaw.

The Glasgow Warriors stand-off had put clear daylight between the teams with a conversion and two long-range penalties.

But an ambitious back-flip pass to Kevin Utterson was intercepted by substitute Ionut Tofan to set up an uneasy finale.

The visitors had the better of the opening period and went ahead with a penalty by stand-off Remus Lungu.

Howarth missed a chance to draw level but made amends by claiming the first try, only to miss the conversion.

Romania regained the initiative after Nathan Ross was penalised for dissent to allow Lungu to kick the penalty.

Late scare

The Scots' response was instant as Howarth discovered his kicking touch to slot a penalty and snatch back the lead.

Romania were reduced to 13 men just before the interval when Lungu and wing Ioan Teodoresu were yellow-carded, but they retook the lead nonetheless.

They embarked on a well-controlled rolling maul close to the line and number eight Alin Petrache ploughed over.

The rattled Scots roared back after the re-start with a second touchdown through Rory Kerr following a strong burst by Jon Steel.

Howarth added the conversion and landed two long-range penalties to ease the home side's jitters - only for his blunder to let Romania back into the game.

His attempted pass to Utterson fell to substitute Tofan who was left with a clear cruise to the line from 60 metres.

Tofan clipped over the easy conversion but the Scots held out for the win.
