Scholtz gets Springboks call
South Africa flanker Corne Krige takes a pass in the victory over Samoa

Uncapped Free State flanker Hendro Scholtz has been called into South Africa's 24-man squad for their forthcoming Tri-Nations match in New Zealand.

Scholtz missed out on the Springboks' recent 2-0 series win against Wales, and subsequent victories over Argentina and Samoa.

He failed to shine in a national trial before the opening Test against Wales, but impressed in South Africa A's victory over the Pumas last month.

He is likely to provide cover for probable skipper Corne Krige, although coach Rudi Straeuli will only confirm his captain once he decides on the starting line-up.

Bob Skinstad led the side against Wales, before the armband was handed to Krige for the most recent Tests against Argentina and Samoa.

Straeuli will review the squad after the match in Wellington on 20 July, before South Africa's second Tri-Nations date against Australia in Brisbane the following Saturday.

"There were some very difficult choices to make, which is always encouraging," Straeuli said.

"Those who have missed out must not be despondent. This squad has been chosen for only the first match of the Tri-Nations series.

"No player can be in a comfort zone. The coaching staff is constantly looking to improve the squad and those in the squad must play well enough to stay there.

"The challenge for those on the fringes is to keep on pressing for Test inclusion by way of good performances for their provincial sides."

Prop Daan Human, locks Hottie Louw and Quinton Davids, number eight Shaun Sowerby and hooker Danie Coetzee have all been omitted from the 22 on duty against Samoa.

Victor Matfield's superior line-out skills get him the nod ahead of the unfortunate Louw, while Breyton Paulse and AJ Venter are both retained despite missing out against Samoa.

With only two specialist locks - Matfield and Jannus Labuschagne - in the party, Venter is expected to act as cover with Krige, Joe van Niekerk and Skinstad the likely back-row trio.

The experienced Ollie le Roux, James Dalton and Willie Meyer are expected to start in the front row, with Lawrence Sephaka, Delarey du Preez and Faan Rautenbach in reserve.

Full-back Brent Russell, the find of the Springboks season so far, faces a fitness test on a hamstring injury before the squad depart on Thursday.

They will base themselves in Brisbane for a week before travelling to New Zealand two days before the Wellington fixture.

South Africa squad:

Backs: De Wet Barry, Johannes Conradie, Werner Greeff, Marius Joubert, Neil de Kock, Breyton Paulse (all Western Province), Dean Hall, Andre Pretorius (both Golden Lions), Adrian Jacobs (Blue Bulls), Brent Russell (Mpumalanga Pumas), Stefan Terblanche (Natal Sharks)

Forwards: Jannus Labuschagne, Willie Meyer, Joe van Niekerk, Delarey du Preez, Lawrence Sephaka (all Golden Lions), Corne Krige, Faan Rautenbach, Bobby Skinstad (all Western Province), Ollie le Roux, AJ Venter (both Natal Sharks), James Dalton (Gauteng Falcons), Victor Matfield (Blue Bulls), Hendro Scholtz (Free State Cheetahs)
