England name five new caps
Geoff Appleford
Appleford will get a chance to impress
England will give new caps to five players in Saturday's Test against Argentina at Velez Sarsfield.

England face a huge task against Argentina, who beat Six Nations champions France 28-27 three days ago.

And coach Clive Woodward's decision to rest players this summer following the gruelling season of club and international rugby means places are up for grabs.

Those new to the team are:

  • London Irish pair Michael Horak and Geoff Appleford
  • Saracens centre Ben Johnstone
  • Bristol wing Phil Christophers
  • Harlequins lock Alex Codling

Woodward learned little from Monday night's 29-24 defeat to Argentina A, with regard to his Test selection.

Try-scoring Sale wing Mark Cueto stood out, but Woodward has made wholesale changes from the side on duty against the Pumas' second-string.

He will be able to cast an eye over World Cup hopefuls such as Christophers, Horak and the highly-rated Charlie Hodgson.

With Horak chosen at full-back, Leicester's Tim Stimpson plays on the right wing while Hodgson earns a starting chance.

England are looking for an eighth victory from 11 starts against Argentina.

England team:

M Horak (London Irish); T Stimpson (Leicester), G Appleford (London Irish), B Johnston (Saracens), P Christophers (Bristol); C Hodgson (Sale), A Gomarsall (Gloucester); D Flatman (Saracens), S Thompson (Northampton), P Vickery (Gloucester, captain), A Codling (Harlequins), B Kay (Leicester), A Sanderson (Sale), L Moody (Leicester), J Worsley (Wasps). Replacements: M Regan (Bath), T Woodman (Gloucester), H Vyvyan (Newcastle), A Balding (Leicester), N Walshe (Sale), D Walder (Newcastle), K Sorrell (Saracens)
