Paul gets England 'A' call
Henry Paul shares a joke with Austin Healey
Paul (left) has already trained with the England squad
Henry Paul will pull on an England shirt for the first time in Friday night's A international against Scotland at Stirling.

The former Bradford Bulls rugby league star has made a stuttering start to his union career as Gloucester's number 10 but is selected at centre alongside Wasps' Fraser Waters.

New Zealand-born Paul will hope to impress England coach Clive Woodward in a strong A side containing capped players such as skipper Steve Borthwick, Wasps full-back Josh Lewsey and Saracens prop David Flatman.

Paul has previously trained with the full England squad and Friday's game will allow the England hierarchy to assess his progress since switching codes earlier this season.

In line with the selection policy of the England team to face Scotland on Saturday, A team bosses have chosen players who are in good form for their club.

Wings Mark Cueto and Steve Hanley have been in prolific try-scoring form for Sale while Newcastle's Dave Walder and Saracen's Nick Walshe form the half-back partnership.

Newport flanker Peter Buxton, Gloucester's Andy Hazell and Sale's Alex Sanderson are included in a strong back-row with promising Leeds Lock Tom Palmer also getting a chance.

"We have an exciting young squad, with some interesting new names coming through," said England A coach Ged Glynn.

"There is tremendous strength in depth in the England camp at present, and lots of competition for places."

Team: J Lewsey (Wasps); M Cueto (Sale), H Paul (Gloucester), F Waters (Wasps), S Hanley (Sale); D Walder (Newcastle), N Walshe (Saracens); D Flatman (Saracens), A Long (Bath), R Nebbett (Leicester), T Palmer (Leeds), S Borthwick (Bath, capt), P Buxton (Newport), A Hazell (Gloucester), A Sanderson (Sale). Replacements: B Johnston (Saracens), H Charlton (Newcastle), M Worsley (London Irish), A Titterrell (Sale), A Brown (Bristol), A Goode (Leicester), D Danaher (London Irish).
