Brave Scarlets bruised by Bourgoin
Martyn Madden
Martyn Madden crossed for another try for Llanelli
Bourgoin 54-38 Llanelli

Llanelli's mistakes cost the Scarlets the chance of victory in a dramatic Heineken Cup Pool Three tie at the Stade Pierre Rajon.

Trailing 24-3 in the 20th minute, Llanelli fought back to reduce the gap to just five points at half-time after six penalties from fly-half Stephen Jones, plus a penalty try after a high tackle on Matthew Watkins.

But a second-half sin-binning for Salesi Finau and some crucial lapses in concentration allowed the French to fire back.

  Match details:
Bourgoin:
Tries: Tuni, Davis, Coux, Peclier, Caillet
Cons: Boyet (4)
Pens: Boyet (6)
DG: Peclier
Llanelli:
Tries: Pen Try, M Madden
Cons: S Jones (2)
Pens: S Jones (8)
After last week's impressive win at Sale, Bourgoin are now clear at the top of the group and in charge of the qualification race.

Thrust

Bourgoin's three first-half tries had come from Pierre Caillet, Fijian wing Eremodo Tuni and fly-half Alexandre Peclier.

Llanelli had the best possible start after the break when prop Martyn Madden sped home after a thrust by Finau.

Jones converted to put the Scarlets 32-20 ahead, but then came the yellow card for a high tackle by the Tongan.

Three Boyet penalties and an opportunist try by wing Jean-Francois Coux gave the French the edge, but Jones' boot kept the Welsh in the game.

A late Boyet penalty and a last-gasp try from centre Glenn Davis took the French away.

I thought the score flattered Bourgoin

Flattering

After the game, French coach Philippe Saint Andre said:

"It was our physical fitness that was a key factor in the end but it will be very difficult for us to go and play in the return fixture at Stradey Park."

Llanelli coach Gareth Jenkins was hugely disappointed at the defeat.

"We were too generous early on and paid the price by giving away 21 points," he said.

"I thought the score flattered Bourgoin and the yellow card for Salesi Finau was a crucial blow to our hopes half-way through the second half.
