Tuilagi was a constant handful for Newcastle

Leicester wing Manu Tuilagi scored twice as the Tigers ran in six tries to demolish Newcastle at Welford Road.

Leicester's Billy Twelvetrees and Newcastle's Jimmy Gopperth exchanged kicks before Tigers were awarded a penalty try in a fractured first half.

But the home side's pack dominated after the break, providing the platform for tries from skipper Jordan Crane, Tuilagi, Anthony Allen and Matt Smith.

Luke Fielden managed a late individual try for Falcons, converted by Gopperth.

A scrappy but evenly matched first half saw the scores tied 6-6 after the opening quarter but a lack of discipline from the home side allowed Gopperth to put the Falcons in front 12-6 with two further faultless shots at goal.

Tigers were awarded a penalty try in the 32nd minute after electing for the scrum under the posts when Newcastle infringed under intense pressure from the hosts.

And Leicester then changed tactics and deployed their rolling maul to devastating effect, prompting good breaks from Scott Hamilton and Tuilagi.

Newcastle fought back towards the end of the half but Gopperth's snatched drop-goal attempt on the stroke of half-time drifted wide.

Crane, who gave a towering performance at number eight, got his side off to a dream start in the second half, starting and finishing off a move by racing over the line from 22 metres out. Twelvetrees was again on hand to add the conversion.

It was the start of a ruthless 25-minute spell from Tigers as Tuilagi used his powerful hand-off to go over as the hosts started to find joy out wide.

Twelvetrees missed the extras but by now Leicester's pack were running the game and their forward exertion led to Crane's pop pass to send Allen over ahead of a successful conversion.

Seconds later Tigers seized their bonus point when Tuilagi intercepted a Falcons move to race 60 metres down the left touchline for his brace.

Smith ended a powerful sweeping move for Leicester's sixth try after destructive driving work from Crane and Thomas Waldrom.

Fielden grabbed a consolation for Falcons with 10 minutes left with a deft chip and chase and Gopperth converted.

But there was sobering news for Tigers from Twickenham as it emerged Leicester's injury-ravaged squad could be further depleted by injuries to Toby Flood and Tom Croft while on England duty.

Leicester director of rugby told BBC Radio Leicester:
"It was a very scrappy first half but the boys fronted up in the second half.

"Our discipline was a bit poor and we gave away too many penalties. We did some good things but let ourselves down with discipline.

"We had a barnstorming start to the second half and they didn't want to play - which is a dangerous thing when you come to Welford Road."

Newcastle head coach Alain Tait said:
"We could have led at half-time. We slowed their ball down well and kicked our goals and their play was very static.

"After the interval their forwards got much more involved and bullied us in the contact area. We didn't respond, we didn't retaliate which is not acceptable at this level.

"Our scrummage was again a problem but with injuries we are down to the bare bones."
