Hodgson kicked seven penalties and a conversion for Sale

Sale fly-half Charlie Hodgson kicked seven penalties to keep 14-man Gloucester at bay at Edgeley Park.

The Sharks led 16-8 at the break after a converted Lee Thomas try and three Hodgson penalties to Tom Voyce's try.

Gloucester lost Mike Tindall to injury in the first half and his replacement Charlie Sharples was sent off for a reckless challenge.

Will James and Greg Somerville scored for strong-finishing Gloucester but Hodgson's boot proved the difference.

Sale avoided a fifth defeat in their last five league games to ease the pressure on coach Kingsley Jones as they climbed up to sixth in the table, with Gloucester back in 10th.

Hodgson stroked a third-minute penalty but opposite number Nicky Robinson soon drew Gloucester level with a drop-goal.

Sale then lost centre Andy Tuilagi to injury in the 12th minute before Tindall followed him off the field four minutes later after pulling up with an apparent hamstring injury following a chase of his own kick from near the halfway line.

Another penalty from Hodgson restored the hosts' lead before scrum-half Dwayne Peel conjured space for fellow Welshman Thomas to race home from 20 metres out after 28 minutes.

Hodgson added the conversion but three minutes later Voyce burrowed over in the left corner for Gloucester.

Robinson missed with his conversion and Hodgson added another penalty before Sharples was sent off for a challenge on Marika Vakacegu.

Robinson cut the gap to five points shortly after the restart with another penalty but Hodgson added two more to put Sale 22-11 ahead by the hour mark.

But Sale, despite having an extra man, created precious little in the second half and Gloucester hauled themselves right back into it in the 66th minute when James crashed over from close range.

Robinson's conversion brought them to within three points of Sale but Hodgson landed two penalties before Somerville touched down in the right corner to earn his side a bonus point.

Sale coach Kingsley Jones:

"There is nobody high-fiving each other in the changing room at the moment, which is a good sign.

"There was pressure because we needed the win tonight, and sometimes it's better to win ugly than to lose smart.

"Let's be honest - it wasn't the greatest game in the world and was about two teams who are struggling."

Gloucester coach Bryan Redpath:

"To play with 14 men for 50 minutes and still outscore them by three tries to one, I'm delighted.

"There has been a lot of criticism thrown our way over the last couple of weeks - and in some aspects quite rightly so - but I've never doubted the players' ambition or passion to play for Gloucester.

"Thankfully, the supporters who came up here saw that when we had our backs up against the wall.

"I'm chuffed to bits with them, and you could see at half-time how they felt.

"I've not questioned the players' desire and I thought the players' performance was the best there has been this season, when we played those 50 minutes with 14 men."
