As both a young gun and a cross-coder the 21-year-old Wigan-born flyer will attract plenty of attention in his first season in the Premiership.
The former Wigan Warriors and England rugby league player moved to Northampton in 2007 and spent a year learning the 15-man code in National League One.
He ripped up defences at that level from the wing, scoring 39 tries in 25 league appearances for Saints last season.
But in addition to his try-scoring ability, Ashton has a "good rugby brain" according to Saints coach Jim Mallinder, so his old league position of full-back is an option.
