Saracens cruised past injury-hit basement club Leeds at Vicarage Road, scoring 33 points in each half.

Francisco Leonelli grabbed a 15-minute hat-trick in the first half as Sarries ran riot to boost their play-off hopes.

Nick Lloyd, Adam Powell, Hugh Vyvyan, Tom Ryder, Kameli Ratuvou, Brent Russell and Glen Jackson also crossed, with Jackson kicking eight conversions.

Stuart Hooper's late try was little consolation for Leeds, who are now 14 points adrift of safety at the bottom.

Deprived of 12 players because of injury, the Yorkshire club now have just four games left to avoid an instant return to National League One.

Loose-head prop Lloyd opened the scoring after six minutes before Leeds full-back Leigh Hinton hit the post with a penalty.

But when Jackson set up Argentina international Leonelli for the first of his treble, the floodgates opened - with Sarries reaching the four-try bonus-point mark within the opening half-hour.

It was a memorable afternoon for Alan Gaffney's side, who host the Ospreys in next week's Heineken Cup quarter-final.

As the tries continued to rack up, the home side were 59-0 ahead when ex-Saracens man Hooper's try, converted by Brooks, finally got the visitors on the scoreboard before Russell completed the rout.

  • Saracens director of rugby Alan Gaffney:
"It gives us confidence to play the way we want to play and the way we know we can play. It also gives the players confidence in themselves.

"Francisco Leonelli had a great game and he ran some really good lines off Brent Russell. He was good under the high ball and was strong in defence.

"It'll be tough picking the side for next week's game against the Ospreys."

  • Leeds director of rugby Stuart Lancaster:
"Saracens were outstanding. I suspected there would be a reaction from their (EDF Energy Cup semi-final) defeat to Ospreys and we copped it.

"We looked like a tired side and the boys are devastated.

"The important thing for us now is to remain competitive. We've got to get over this quickly as we've got Bath in the European Challenge Cup next week."
