Exeter Chiefs have strengthened their squad with the signings of Luke Arscott and James Phillips from Bristol.

The pair were both part of the Bristol side that lost 38-16 on aggregate to Exeter in the Championship play-off final last month.

Full-back Arscott, 25, started his career at Exeter before moving on to Plymouth Albion and then Bristol.

Lock Phillips, 22, was a product of Bristol's academy, and went on to make 41 appearances for the side.

Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter said the returning Arscott will bring a great deal of talent to the club ahead of their first Premiership campaign.

He said: "Whilst he has Premiership experience he has still got a lot to give, and that was important to us.

"He is still very ambitious, very keen and desperate to be playing in the Premiership."

Baxter, who made over 300 appearances in the Chiefs pack during his playing career, feels that the coaching team at Sandy Park will be able to help the talented Phillips improve his game even further.

He said: "I watched a lot of James over the course of last season as I analysed a lot of Championship games.

"He was a very good ball carrier and I think there are areas where we can improve his game.

"He was upset at what happened to Bristol and that's only right, I don't want him to forget the impact Bristol have had on his rugby career, but he is now committed to Exeter."
