The Pirates squad celebrate winning the British & Irish Cup in Camborne
Cornish Pirates overcame Munster to win the inaugural British & Irish Cup in Camborne on Sunday.
Steve Winn crossed the line to give the home side the lead, with Munster kicking two penalties either side of a Johnny Bentley penalty for the Pirates.
A converted Rhodri McAtee try, and second penalty from Bentley gave the Pirates a 20-6 half-time lead.
The sides then traded penalties after the break, before Danny Barnes crossed for a late Munster consolation try.
The win is the second time the Pirates have claimed major silverware in recent years, adding to their 2007 National Trophy victory over Exeter Chiefs.
The Pirates forwards coach Ian Davies said Sunday's win came off the back of a superb defensive effort from the home side.
He told BBC Radio Cornwall: "I think the performance was really, really good.
"The defence, especially in that middle third coming out of half-time, was phenomenal so hats off to the boys. They were tremendous."
Davies also paid tribute to the Pirates' top try-scorer and talismanic number eight Blair Cowan.
"Some Premiership clubs are starting to notice him and too right they should, because if there's a better eight in the Championship I'd be amazed to know who it is.
"Blair goes hard, he goes forward and his defensive work is first rate."
The Cup title provides the Pirates with a positive end to a season that saw them narrowly miss out on qualifying for the semi-finals of the Championship play-offs.
And Davies believes the achievements will provide a great deal of impetus going into their next campaign.
"It gives us our foundation," he said. "There are little things that we've got to get right off the field as well as on it but it's about progression. Hopefully come September we'll move forward again.
