Parisse has looked impressive in the November Test series

Italy captain Sergio Parisse is set to miss the Six Nations after suffering a knee ligament injury. The 26-year-old Stade Francais number eight sustained the injury in training ahead of Saturday's Test against Samoa and faces up to six months out. "The possibility of surgery can't be excluded, which would have a recovery time of around 120 to 180 days," said team doctor Roberto Pozzoni. Parisse, who has 67 caps, will be replaced by Josh Sole against Samoa. His absence for the Six Nations would be a massive blow to the Azzurri, for whom the back-rower has been the outstanding player for the past few years. His sterling contribution in an often losing cause saw him nominated for the 2008 IRB Player of the Year award, having replaced lock Marco Bortolami as captain earlier in the year. Parisse will also miss the rest of Stade's Heineken Cup group matches, including home and away games against Ulster, a home fixture with Bath and trip to Edinburgh.
