Lucs go down to leaders Ampthill

Luctonians' run of four successive wins wins came to an end as they were well beaten by National Division Three Midlands leaders Ampthill.

Lucs trailed to a converted try before Jamie Simpson slotted over a penalty for the north Herefordshire side.

Another try from Matt Loon converted by Davies stretched the home side's lead.

Lucs hit back with a converted Will Hodnett try, but Ampthill, coached by former Worcester Warriors man Clive Griffiths, crossed for two more scores.

"To be fair to Ampthill, they were the better side on the day," Lucs spokesman Dave Burke told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"Lucs will take some comfort for their showing but sadly no points."

Elsewhere, Hereford pulled of an outstanding 18-17 win at Kenilworth thanks to a late Adam Gwynne try.

Meanwhile, tries from Drew Harper, Nigel Burrows and Warren Oliver plus 10 points from the boot of Ben Copson kept Bromsgrove in the top four as they won 25-16 against Kettering.

But, controversy surrounded Malvern's home defeat against Luton.

The home side led with a Jay Martin try, before Luton hit back with three ties of their own to lead 31-10 at the interval.

New signing James Aston crossed the line to close the gap for Malvern, but in the closing minutes the referee appeared to award a penalty to the hosts, changed his decision and Luton raced away for the final score.

"We were outplayed by their backs in the first half, but our forwards took control in the scrum and line out," said Malvern director of rugby David Robins.

"It looked as if we would nil them in the second half until the aberration over the non-penalty let them get out of jail."
