Henry called into Ireland squad

Chris Henry
Chris Henry receives a deserved call-up to Ireland's autumn Test squad.

Ulster number eight Chris Henry is one of nine uncapped players in Ireland's 39-man squad for autumn Tests against Australia, Fiji and South Africa.

Henry is one of six Ulstermen in Declan Kidney's first squad of the new season.

As expected Stephen Ferris, Paddy Wallace, Andrew Trimble and Tom Court are included with centre Darren Cave forcing his way in.

Other uncapped players included six Leinster players with Jonathan Sexton edging out Ulster's Ian Humphreys.

Sexton and Humphreys are in a race to see who will be back-up to Ronan O'Gara while Paddy Wallace can also be called upon to wear the number 10 jersey.

Connacht have two uncapped players included with hooker Sean Cronin and prop Brett Wilkinson in alongside other new boys John Fogarty and Cian Healy.

Leinster centre Fergus McFadden, flanker Sean O'Brien and giant lock Devin Toner are also involved for the first time, while Northampton flanker Neil Best and Ospreys winger Tommy Bowe are also included.

Apart from Humphreys, other notable omissions include the Leinster quartet of lock Malcolm O'Kelly, banned flanker Shane Jennings, full-back Girvan Dempsey and hooker Bernard Jackman.

Ireland start with a Sunday game against Australia on 15 November at Croke Park before facing Fiji at the RDS the following Saturday.

The final game is against world champions South Africa at Croke Park on 28 November.

Looking ahead to the games Kidney says that Ireland's strength in depth will be tested.

There were some hard calls made in selection, which is what you want

Ireland coach Declan Kidney

"November represents a challenge on several fronts with three full internationals and two A games against quality opposition, so it will mean that the strength of our resources will be tested," said Kidney

"The games so far this season have given plenty of options in terms of competition for places.

"There were some hard calls made in selection, which is what you want, and players not included today will come into the reckoning for the two games against Tonga and Argentina Jaguars.

"We now have to try to come up with the combinations to not only win against some of the best teams in the world, with two of those sides ranked above us, but also continue to develop the international experience levels for some of those players. "

An A squad for the Tonga game and a 30-man squad for the Australia test match will be announced at the end of the camp next week in Limerick.
