Wales v Canada as it happened

By Peter Shuttleworth

2130: It wasn't a classic, if we're being brutally honest. I'm sorry for not fulfilling my promise of scintillating rugby to warm you all up on a freezing evening. I feel I failed you all. But a win is a win, I suppose. But Halfpenny and that lad penalty try are two names to keep an eye out for in the future. I'm turning off my Avril Lavigne CD and it's up to me to say "See you later boy."

But before I go, log on to the BBC Sport website on Saturday evening if you can bear to watch the extended match highlights online and tune in top Scrum V on BBC Two Wales at 1700 GMT on Sunday for highlights and expert analysis. TTFN.

2122: "We did turn the ball over too many times but there are plenty of positives to take from that performance as some of the uncapped lads and the boys who haven't played for a while put their hands up."
Wales captain Ryan Jones.

2115: "We made it difficult for ourselves."
Wales winger Mark Jones.

2114: "Awful display by Wales, awful. A score of only five tries to one. I am absolutely disgusted Wales. What is wrong with you? Only 34-13? We were expecting at least 60 points because we really do not rate the Canadians at all. Well my friends, SALUTE THE CANADIANS, they played awesome and gave the welsh a mighty scare in the first half.
Aussie-Rugger on 606

2110: "We always play the minor nations on a Friday night in the autumn internationals and we always play rubbish. The new away kit looks awful . We should not use these games to blood youngsters, that's what the A team was for, we should play the first team and be hammering these teams, like Ireland did last week, to get the players confidence up. We should be putting at least 40 points on Canada tonight."
Anon via text on 81111

2118: "The Southern Hemisphere side's will be worrying after watching Wales tonight...worrying whether to declare at half time or not. That was woeful."
Toffee_Shark on 606

Full-time: Wales 34-13 Canada

79 mins: TRY Wales 34-13 Canada
It may have been a forgettable game for most but Wales' young winger Leigh Halfpenny will always remember beating Canada as his sped over for his second try with the very last move of the game. The one-time Dental student is certainly not a toothless finisher. That's as good as it gets folks. Biggar, a former drama student, showed he can perform on the biggest stage as he kicked another conversion.

78 mins: "This has been Canada's game. If this this game is going to be released as a DVD at Christmas, it'll go straight into the bargain bin. It has not been a good night for Wales."
BBC Wales pundit Stuart Davies.

77 mins: BBC man-of-the-match Wales prop John Yapp
"He has been destroying the Canadian scrum all night, it's been a good night for John Yapp."
BBC Wales pundit Stuart Davies.

74 mins: TRY Wales 27-13 Canada
Deja vu strikes! For the second time in as many games, Wales' replacement fly-half gives away an interception try and this time Canada's Ryan Smith was the beneficiary and Biggar was not better as his error was punished by the Canadian centre who dashed over from 40-odd yards. And it's celebrated with a bit of Bryan Adams 'Run To You.' It doesn't get any better than that for a Canadian. But Biggar's mistake should not endanger a Welsh win.

71 mins: TRY Wales 27-6 Canada
Sign this lad penalty up as he scores his second try of the evening for Wales. Referee Stuart Dickenson awards another penalty try as Canada force another scrum down. Biggar kicks the conversion with consummate ease.

68 mins: Richie Hibbard goes agonisingly close to his first Wales try as the Ospreys hooker piles towards the whitewash but he just could not get it over. Close but no cigar.

67 mins: "Corned beef pasties all the way."
Ebzy and Simon in a Norwich curry house via text on 81111

64 mins: "The Fridge" is on, 21 stone Sale Sharks prop Eifion Roberts takes to the field to replace Rhys Thomas. This cool customer (get it?) was only an amateur rugby player for Ruthin four years, now he's making his Welsh debut aged 27. Good effort.

60 mins: "The Canadians have done a very good job in the tackle area, they've made it very difficult for Wales."
BBC Wales pundit Stuart Davies.

58 mins: TRY Wales 20-6 Canada
Wales are awarded a much-needed gift from Stuart Dickenson as the referee's patience runs out to award the hosts a penalty try as Canada continue to go down in the scrum. Biggar's boot adds the extras to put a little Welsh respectability to the score-line.

56 mins: Powell, another Cardiff Blue having an impressive season, has made an immediate impact with a few darting runs through the heart of the Canadian back-line but the tourists holds firm.

53 mins: News about Hook's injury is that he has sustained a knee tendon injury but it is too early to say if he'll join fellow Welsh and Ospreys team-mates Gavin Henson, Mike Phillips, Jonathan Thomas and Duncan Jones in missing the rest of this autumn series.

51 mins: Almost as PaddyWho writes the Wales skipper and debutant scrum-half Martin Roberts are replaced by Andy Powell, man-of-the-match against South Africa, and the experienced Dwayne Peel who took over the captain's armband. Interesting. Also Shanklin has been replaced by Jamie Roberts.

48 mins: "So far it is another minus against Ryan Jones' captaincy as he should be rallying his inexperienced troops."
PaddyWho on 606

47 mins: "I share people's frustrations but when exactly are we supposed to blood young players if it's not in games like this? Give them a chance. I could end up eating my words couldn't I?!
SuperSubGaz in Barry via text on 81111

46 mins: PENALTY Wales 13-6 Canada
Young Dan Biggar kicks his first international points as Wales aim to make their full-status count.

43 mins: Let's just put this into context. The Welsh players are professional rugby players while the Canadians are mainly part-time amateurs and youngsters who've had to take holidays from their jobs to be here. Heroes.

42 mins: "What a load of rubbish, it's worse than my journey home on the A470. Get the 'Fridge' Eifion Roberts on. He'll sort this out."
Hometown Unicorn en route to Bangorvia text on 81111

41 mins: "What a laugh! The most memorable bit is the yellow shirts and if I was one of the 5,000 outside, I would go home now while I have a chance! But can't wait 'till New Zealand next week!"
Essex Taffvia text on 81111

2026: "Typical week in the life of a Welsh rugby fan. Throw away victory against the world champions then get embarrassed by a bunch of amateurs."
Mattvia text on 81111

2023: "What is surprising me is the amount of unforced errors we're making, we've made ten or 12 and we must make Canada work harder."
Wales team manager Alan Phillips.

2021: Yes, if the aforementioned pasty is cheese and onion. I'm definitely a corned beef man.

2020: "Two mins after buying a pasty on the train from London they reduce all the goods to half price. Now Wales struggling against the Canadians. Can it get worse?"
Brenvia text on 81111

Half-time: Wales 10-6 Canada

40 mins: "Wales will be really pleased going in at half-time ahead because there's been plenty of unforced errors and they're not playing at their best.
Former Wales captain and BBC Wales pundit Colin Charvis

39 mins: TRY Wales 10-6 Canada
Pardon Stuart?! Leigh Halfpenny shows what all the fuss is about as the 19-year-old wing sensation dances inside then out of the Canadian defence to dive over. Brilliant score from the young lad. Biggar, another 19-year-old, takes the conversion but his effort comes back off the post.

37 mins: "This first half won't live long in the memory at all for a Welsh fan."
BBC Wales pundit Stuart Davies.

36 mins: The Canadians are defending with gusto as this time it's Robin Sowden Taylor who is bulldozed out of touch after good work from Stoddard and Shanklin. But, let's face it, Wales' creative guile is almost non-existent.

33 mins: PENALTY Wales 5-6 Canada
Surely not...James Pritchard shows the Welsh boys how to kick as he dinks over another penalty.

31 mins: Red sauce all round here please Anon...

30 mins: "Cmon lads, I have a bet with a mate, Wales up by 30 at half time or I make the bacon sarnies during tomorrow's rugby! I reckon Ireland hopes of a Grand Slam are getting better!"
Anonvia text on 81111

27 mins: Worrying news for the Welsh Rugby Union from outside the Millennium Stadium as there are apparently approximately 5,000 fans still trying to buy or pick tickets for the game.

25 mins: TRY Wales 5-3 Canada
Stoddart lifts the early glooms as the Scarlets full-back dives over in the corner for his second try in three internationals thanks to a beautiful set up by Shanklin, who thankfully cleared his head! Biggar misses the conversion.

24 mins: It's Halfpenny again heading for whitewash after a lovely Morgan Stoddart off-load but the Cardiff Blue is bundled into touch.

20 mins: "This is as ropier start that Wales could have dreamed of. There's no shape, no structure and they've two inexperienced half-backs both of whom are making their debut."
BBC Wales pundit Stuart Davies.

19 mins: They're dropping like flies as Tom Shanklin is laid out on the turf but thankfully the Wales centre shakes off a heavy bump to continue.

18 mins: Worrying news for Wales as their fly-half sensation James Hook, the Ospreys star, hobbles off with the help of Wales physio Mark Davies. Dan Biggar, the latest out of Welsh rugby's mythical fly-half factory, comes on for his first cap. Wales hope it's a case of the Biggar, the better....sorry.

17 mins: "I sometimes think the Welsh backs are a little bit too tame taking the ball forward"
BBC Wales pundit Stuart Davies.

16 mins: Wales fail to secure a line-out near the Canada try-line. Don't old habits die hard?

13 mins: Wales have a chance to strike back immediately but James Hook, whose mistake effectively cost Wales a memorable win over the Springboks, misses a penalty from close to the touch-line.

10 mins: PENALTY Wales 0-3 Canada
That's not in the Welsh script as James Pritchard kicks a simple penalty from close range to put Canada in front.

6 mins: Quality Gaz! Wales hope it won't be a case of fools gold in their change kit.....get it? Sorry. I'm here all week.

5 mins: "My old South Bank Uni rugby shirt is electric blue and "gold". I went to training three times as a fresher, got given my kit and they never saw me again... I was too sacred to wear it about campus though in case someone 'didn't' recognise me. Anyway, Cymru Am Byth!"
SuperSubGaz in Barry via text on 81111

3 mins: Wales' first attack and it's that man Halfpenny in the thick of it. But the teenage tearaway just can't get on the end of Tom Shanklin's clever kick to the corner as Canada cover well.

Kick-off: It shows what a good ticketing policy can do as against one of the lesser teams in world rugby - sandwiched between world champs South Africa and the mighty New Zealand - and in the middle of the credit crunch, there's about 60,000 crammed inside the Millennium Stadium cheering Wales on.

1928: Just found the winner of The Best Banner Award.... 'Even in the credit crunch, Halfpenny goes a long way." That is genius, absolute genius. Take a bow my friend. Young Wales winger Leigh has a lot to live up to!

1926: Wales skipper Ryan Jones leads Wales onto the Millennium Stadium turf as Wales great and BBC Wales pundit Ieuan Evans says in the TV studio it should be a "comprehensive Wales win because they are the professional side."

1925: "Since our last meeting at last year's Rugby World Cup Wales, have gone forward while the Canadians have gone in the other direction as they're a team in transition."
Wales legend and BBC Radio Wales pundit Phil Bennett

1920: "Everyone is expecting a huge win, but we're fielding an inexperienced side, in all positions and we lack cohesion because no-one has ever played together, expect a tight first half with plenty of mishaps from players who don't know each other!!!"
hofgasteinboy on 606

1915: Okay get your Celine Dion and Bryan Adams records out and get in the mood to face the Canadians. The two sides have met on 10 occasions and Wales have won nine - the only Canadian victory was a 26-24 win at Cardiff Arms Park in 1993.

1900: Good evening everyone, it's a bitterly cold evening here in Cardiff and I'm hoping for a decent game of rugby to warm us all up.

Grand Slam winners Wales will be wearing their new yellow shirts. The Welsh Rugby Union claims their change strip is gold but I'm having none of that so it's more like the canaries than dragons tonight.

Let's hope it's just like watching Brazil. (Brazil's footy boys I mean, not their rugby team because they're rubbish despite a 100% record against Peru and Costa Rica).

Wales coach Warren Gatland has retained just three players from their 20-15 humbling by world champions South Africa on Saturday with captain Ryan Jones, rookie winger Leigh Halfpenny and Lions centre Tom Shanklin avoiding the axe.

The fringe players should be desperate to impress Gatland as starting spots for the mouth-watering New Zealand and Australia Tests later on this month.

Canada's youthful look is why the bookies are giving the tourists a 43-point start.

Here's a quick check on the teams:

Wales: Morgan Stoddart (Scarlets); Leigh Halfpenny (Cardiff Blues), Tom Shanklin (Cardiff Blues), Andrew Bishop (Ospreys), Mark Jones (Scarlets); James Hook (Ospreys), Martin Roberts (Scarlets); John Yapp (Cardiff Blues), Richard Hibbard (Ospreys), Rhys Thomas (Newport Gwent Dragons), Ian Gough (Ospreys) , Luke Charteris (Newport Gwent Dragons), Dafydd Jones (Scarlets), Robin Sowden-Taylor (Cardiff Blues), Ryan Jones (Ospreys, capt).
