Exeter Chiefs centre Stephen Ward says Saturday's victory over third-placed Nottingham was important for pulling clear in second from the Midlanders.
The victory opened up a six-point gap between the clubs while Exeter now sit just four points behind National One league leaders Leeds Carnegie.
"It's a very important win for us as they were third place and hot on our heels," Ward told BBC Radio Devon.
"It really is a good day at the office for us," he added.
"As the score goes it couldn't have gone much better for us with a win along with four tries and them not getting any bonus points."
Chiefs travel to 13th-placed Newbury Blues on Saturday.
