Cornish Pirates get in Kiwi coach

Cornish Pirates

Cornish Pirates have looked to New Zealand to end their poor run of form by hiring Kiwi coach Chris Stirling until Christmas.

The Wellington B coach will join the Pirates at the end of October.

The Pirates have lost four of their last six matches to see them in eighth place in the National League One table.

Chief executive Ron Coward said that Stirling will be particularly useful in helping the Pirates adapt to this season's Experimental Law Variations.

Chris is highly regarded by the NZRFU and his peers in New Zealand who have provided excellent references

"It is clear we are not progressing sufficiently under the ELVs and being determined to take measures to turn around our present performance, and to achieve the results expected and required from our squad, the Pirates have recruited Chris Stirling to advise and assist our coaching team," Coward said in a statement.

"The southern hemisphere has grasped the challenge of the ELVs with great success and Wellington B are currently unbeaten in the Air New Zealand B Cup as of Saturday last."

New laws brought in at the start of this season include rules that mean mauls can be grounded by defending teams and there are no restrictions on the number of players in a lineout.

"Chris is highly regarded by the NZRFU," added Coward, "and his peers in New Zealand who have provided excellent references."
