Foresters play-off win 'no fluke'

Rugby union

Cinderford's Rob James hailed his side's defence after they clinched promotion to National League Two.

The Foresters ended the best season in their history with a 15-14 play-off win over National League Three North runners-up Darlington Mowden Park.

"I've played in County Championship finals at Twickenham and won them, but this was the most important game I've played in," he said.

"We've got the best defence in the league and it's no fluke."

He told BBC Radio Gloucestershire: "When we practice our defence there's a lot of pressure, a lot of banter and if you miss tackles you're ridiculed and all the rest of it.

"So we create our own pressure on our defensive work - it just goes to show the amount of work our squad are prepared to put in."

And the long-serving James is backing his team-mates to make a go of things in National League Two.

"I've been here for a reasonable amount of time, and this is the tightest team we've had," he said.

"All the boys get on well, there's a lot of banter, a lot of spirit and this game meant a hell of a lot."
