Late Scotland call for Southwell
Scotland full-back Hugo Southwell
Southwell scored a try on his last international appearance in Wales
Hugo Southwell has been drafted into the Scotland starting line-up for Saturday's Six Nations visit to Wales.

Simon Webster has withdrawn due to a hamstring problem and the recalled Chris Paterson will switch to the wing.

Southwell will take Paterson's original place at full-back, with Simon Danielli promoted to the bench.

Paterson had been brought in to replace the injured Rory Lamont, while Kelly Brown is preferred to David Callam at number eight after the loss to France.

Lock Nathan Hines has recovered from a calf injury suffered on Sunday.

And the Perpignan forward will play at the Millennium Stadium, becoming the 23rd Scot to reach the landmark of 50 caps.

Having been controversially left out, Paterson introduced an extra cutting edge when replacing Dan Parks at fly-half in the second half against France.

He will become Scotland's most-capped back, surpassing the 82 achieved by his fellow product of the Gala club, Gregor Townsend.

Head coach Frank Hadden told BBC Sport: "Chris is obviously hugely popular with the fans, he's an iconic figure in Scottish rugby, and rightly so.

"He's a tremendous servant to the national side and he did well coming off the bench last week, so he deserves to start the match."

Southwell, who scored a try on Scotland's last visit to Cardiff, brings with him a wealth of experience.

The 27-year-old Edinburgh star will be making his 38th international appearance.

Replacing Paterson and Brown among the substitutes are Glasgow Warriors centre Graeme Morrison and Edinburgh back-row forward Allister Hogg.

The 25-year-old Morrison won the last of his six caps four years ago but was in try-scoring form for the Scotland A team in their win in Italy at the weekend.

Hadden is confident his side still has the ability to win in Cardiff despite the dent to confidence caused by the 27-6 home defeat by France.

"The players are well aware that they didn't perform as well as we expected them to do and the preparations have already gone well this week and we're expecting a better performance this weekend," Hadden said.

"We were happy with the side we selected last week, but we were aware it might have been short of game time.

"There was a significant number of guys who hadn't played much in the build-up to the game and that was always going to be a bit of a gamble.

"Obviously David Callam is disappointed, but he knows that we have a lot of faith in him, because he had been out for four weeks due to injury and I suspect that's why he didn't have his best game last weekend."
