A late try from debutant wing Julien Candelon gave France a 30-30 draw in a thrilling Test with South Africa.

But replacement Dimitri Yachvili missed the conversion from wide out that would have given the visitors victory.

After Bryan Habana's second try put the Springboks 20-13 up early in the second half, tries from Pascal Pape and Julien Bonnaire edged the French ahead 25-20.

But a Jean de Villiers try and a Percy Montgomery drop goal restored the lead before Candelon's late riposte.

Flanker Yannick Nyanga sprinted over from a Florian Fritz pass to give France an early advantage.

But Percy Montgomery, who kicked 15 points in all, landed a penalty and then converted the first of Habana's scores in the left corner.

Franec hit back with a Frederic Michalak drop goal from almost halfway before Montgomery and Jean-Baptiste Elissalde exchanged penalties to make it 13-13 at half-time.

Habana grabbed his second before France scored twice in four minutes to take command.

Lock Pape ploughed over before some superb handling finished with Elissalde sending a neat cross-kick for Bonnaire to score in the right corner.

Wing Cedric Heyman almost created another try that might have put France out of sight.

But the Springboks responded with a converted De Villiers try to take the lead at 27-25.

Montgomery extended the lead to five points with a drop goal, before more crisp passing allowed France to salvage a draw through Candelon.

The teams meet again in Port Elizabeth next Saturday.
