Lions 7-31 Blue Bulls

The Blue Bulls ran out convincing winners to lift South Africa's domestic championship, the Currie Cup on Saturday.

Tries from Derick Hougaard and Pedrie Wannenberg condemned the Lions to a convincing defeat.

But it was 19-year-old fly-half Hougaard who grabbed the headlines.

The teenager finished the game with 26 points - adding five penalties and two drop goals to his try - to break legendary Springbok Naas Botha's previous Cup final record of 24.

  Match facts
Bulls 31 (15)
Tries: Wannenberg; Hougaard
Pens: Hougaard (5)
Drop goals: Hougaard (2)
Lions 7 (0)
Try: Pretorius
Conv: Pretorius
Hougaard was widely touted as the possible matchwinner prior to the clash and he did not disappoint to help the Bulls to their first title since 1998.

His two drop-goals were slotted from 40 and 48 metres and he showed considerable pace for his try, bursting through a gap to dive over.

The Bulls forwards dominated the match throughout, and the Lions were unable to gain any meaningful possession or territory in the first half to trail 15-0 at the interval.

Springbok flyhalf Andre Pretorius scored a try for the Lions in the third minute of the second period, but it was the only bright spot for the home team on a dismal afternoon.

Bulls flanker Pedrie Wannenburg replied soon after in the 58th minute and Hougaard's score 10 minutes later effectively ended the match as a contest.
