Time to start calling foul

Australia lock and BBC Sport Online columnist David Giffin says action must be taken to combat the professional foul.

I was disappointed to get the yellow card during our victory over Wales at the Millennium Stadium.

There was nothing malicious in it. I wasn't stamping, I was just trying to move the player out of the way so that George (Gregan) could get the ball.

I just got a bit sick of professional fouls and people lying on the ball.

Steve Lander refereed the match quite well for most of the game, but the professional foul is something rugby needs to look at.

Teams would rather give away three points than a try and it's a big problem that the game has to fix.

It's spoiling the game for the spectators as well.

We had plenty of opportunities but, as well as dropping the ball on occasions, we were stopped by the ball being killed.

It would be a much more open game and the attacking team would have a good advantage if it was dealt with.

I'm not sure quite how to solve it, but it's up to law makers really.

As for the game itself, it was a better performance than the last two matches against England and France, but it was pretty frustrating.

The conditions weren't ideal, the ball was wet and both sides turned over a lot of possession.

The handling errors were disappointing because you tend to take possession for granted when you get hold of the ball.

It was a bit surprising that they left the roof open all night when the rain came down.

I thought the point of having a roof was to keep the pitch decent so you can have a good game of running rugby.

To shut it after a night of rain was a waste of time - if you've got it why don't you use it. I'm sure the crowd would have enjoyed a dry game a lot more.

Hopefully, conditions will be better for the Barbarians match on Wednesday. We are looking forward to it as it is the last match of a long tour.

The guys are pretty keen to go out on a high note, play well and go home with a win.

It's a long season now, with training beginning in January and the last game almost in December.

We are looking forward to some time off, but hopefully we can end with something special.
