Woodward angered by Aussies
Robinson justified his selection at full-back
Clive Woodward has revealed his delight at England's 21-15 win over Australia at Twickenham - and criticised the tactics used by Australia at Twickenham on Saturday.
England put their Six Nations defeat in Dublin behind them with a resounding performance over the world champions, with all their points coming from Jonny Wilkinson's boot. Woodward said: "I was pleased and proud for the team. No one lost their bottle after Ireland and the commitment was fantastic. "The preparation this week has been very intense and obviously the result is one of the high points of my rugby career.
"We didn't panic and in the end got a fantastic result." Woodward added that the only disappointing aspect of his team's performance was that they failed to score a try. And he was angered and frustrated by the Australia's performance. "That was Australia's full-strength side and they got what they deserved," Woodward said. "Their first try wasn't a try. They had two guys in front of the ball carrier, which is against the rules. "But they used the same professional tactics as they did last year and gave away a lot of penalties."
"We made a lot of tackles and there is no consolation in scoring the tries. England played some pretty smart rugby," Jones said. Woodward's selection had been criticised before the match - he made nine changes from the team defeated by Ireland. But his judgement was vindicated by a performance in which Jason Robinson posed Australia numerous problems from full-back. Playing the former rugby league star as the last line of defence had been one of Woodward's most criticised decisions. Woodward prasied the efforts of new faces like Joe Worsley and debutant Ben Kay, but defended those who had performed so poorly at Lansdowne Road.
"They'll come back and our game is very healthy. I'm delighted for the whole of English rugby." Australia's repeated ill-discipline gave Wilkinson numerous chances to show his accuracy in front of the posts. The Newcastle stand-off converted five of his six penalty attempts at goal, and added to first half drop goals - six points that proved the difference between the two teams. His tally made him England's new leading scorer against Australia. Wilkinson said: "They defended so well that we decided to see if we could get three points when they were on offer. "Against Australia you've got to keep the scoreboard ticking over. "They're always going to be in the game but that means that they're always chasing."
Stand-in captain Neil Back praised the performance of his forwards. "It was a professional performance and we minimised the errors," Back said. "Today was first class. We dominated possession and territory and it rates as one of the best forward performances I've played in. "It's been hard work this week, a tough test, but the guys pulled through and it was a fantastic performance. It's all about winning and that's what we've done."
