Jonny Wilkinson kicks a penalty against Australia at Twickenham
All of England's 21 points came from Wilkinson
BBC Sport Online rates the England players' performances against Australia.

Jason Robinson

Immediately answered questions about his ability under the high ball, catching a probing Matt Burke punt in the second minute. The crowd roared with expectation every time he had possession. Justified Clive Woodward's decision to play him at full-back.

Austin Healey

The pre-match headlines focused on his reaquaintance with Justin Harrison. His performance on the pitch was less dramatic than his notorious off-field utterings - but he still managed to keep the dangerous Joe Roff relatively quiet.

Will Greenwood

Tried to find gaps to exploit in the Australian defence, but was pegged back by Australian centres Nathan Grey and Daniel Herbert. Nevertheless, worked tirelessly in midfield and in defence.

Mike Catt

Made two dubious decisions, on two separate England attacks, to pass inside when he had men over on the outside. Produced a moment of outrageous improvisation in the 70th minute to avert danger in his own 22, with a flip pass through his own legs.

Dan Luger

Was at his effective best when he came off his wing. He may not have had a real sight of the try-line - but the Saracens man made ground almost every time he got the ball, helping his forwards to consolidate possession in Australian territory.

Jonny Wilkinson

A superb all-round kicking performance from the Newcastle fly-half. Showed he is not totally left-footed with a drop-kick in the 15th minute off his right. Made several important defensive tackles, including one particularly memorable challenge on Nathan Grey in the first half.

Kyran Bracken

Took advantage of Matt Dawson's absence with an assured performance at scrum-half. Gelled well with Wilkinson at fly-half and marshalled his forwards with authority. Made one excellent break in the second half.

Graham Rowntree

The Leicester prop played his best match in an England shirt. Was at the heart of every England drive and gave the Australian front row plenty of headaches with his powerful scrummaging.

Dorian West

Began the match badly when his first lineout throw went straight into Australian hands. But soon made up for his error with a series of accurate throws, as well as turning up in crucial positions in England attacks.

Phil Vickery

Was at the centre of almost every England ruck and maul with fellow prop Rowntree. Displayed delicate handling skills for a front-row forward.

Ben Kay

Yet another excellent performance in only his fourth Test match. The young Leicester second row looked solid in the lineout supporting Danny Grewcock against David Giffin and Justin Harrison.

Danny Grewcock

Dominated the lineout in the first half, catching almost everything thrown his way. Claimed the big catches when the pressure was on.

Richard Hill

Yet another commanding performance from one of England's most consistent performers. Was there to lend support to any England player tackled by an Australian.

Neil Back

Was the main reason why Stephen Larkham was a virtual bystander in the first half. Produced another typical determined performance, but conceded needless penalties when England were in good attacking positions. Will be delighted to have registered a victory against the world champions in his first match as England captain.

Joe Worsley

Lifted his game on the biggest occasion possible. Made the tackle of the match when he turned the on-rushing Stephen Larkham over for England ball.
