Mason takes sting out of Wasps

Treviso avenged the defeat against Wasps last week
Treviso 32-17 Wasps

Irishman Simon Mason was in superb form, kicking eight out of 10 penalties to lead Treviso to victory over Wasps.

His pin-point kicking enabled the Italians to grab their first win of the season at the fourth time of asking.

The Ulsterman, a former Ireland international, made Wasps pay dearly for their indiscipline.

It's nice to give our fans something to shout about for a change
Simon Mason

How he would love to repeat the performance in the remaining pool games against two of his old clubs - Ulster and Stade Francais.

Full-back Mason was in the mood from the start, kicking over his penalties at regular intervals.

Treviso led 15-9 at the break, with Wasps' points coming from three penalties from outside half Mathew Leek.

The game opened up after the interval but it was a tremendous show from the Treviso pack which provided the platform for their win.

Mason added three further penalties but it was not until the final minutes that they made the game safe with a try from scrum-half Peter Richards.

Tremendous support

Outside half Giacomo Preo extended their lead with a drop-goal before winger Shane Roiser went over for a Wasps try with Leek landing a fourth penalty.

Man-of-the-match Mason said afterwards: "We will not be getting carried away. We still have games against Stade Francais and Ulster to come.

"And I would really love to show the door to my old teams. It's nice to give our fans something to shout about for a change.

"They have really supported us and have been fantastic."
