Yorks claim county glory

Cornwall 19-47 Yorkshire

Yorkshire effectively retained their county championship crown after easing past 1999 winners Cornwall at Twickenham with seven tries.

In the one-off match arranged after the championship season was interrupted by the foot-and-mouth crisis, the south-west county were clearly outclassed by their opponents.

An early penalty miss from Yorkshire's Rob Liley was quickly followed by Cornwall taking the lead through Redruth's flying winger Steve Larkins, but it lasted barely a minute.

Immediately from the Rotherham winger Stuart Dixon touched down in the right-hand corner after swift handling through the threequarter line.

Liley made up for his penalty miss by banging over the touchline conversion to ease his side in front - a lead Yorkshire were never to lose.

A second Larkins' penalty a couple of minutes reduced the deficit. But the crunch came shortly afterwards when Yorkshire were awarded a penalty try for persistent Cornish offside.

Larkins continued to keep his side in the hunt with a penalty just past the midway mark in the first half to narrow the score to only five points.

But Yorkshire increased the pace and after good work from Jon Shepherd and Mark Kirkby added a third try which went unconverted.

Cornwall responded with a further Larkins' penalty three minutes from the break.

But any thoughts they had of staying in the hunt were soon dispelled within 90 seconds of the re-start when Danny Scarbrough touched over.

Yorkshire then quickly added a fifth score when Shepherd finished off for another try which Liley converted.

Within a few minutes Hedley Verity added another try for Yorkshire following a sweeping move before James Hendy avoided the whitewash for Cornwall by going in under the sticks seven minutes from time.

Larkins maintained his kicking form by adding a conversion but it was Yorkshire who had the final word when Kirkby got onto the scoresheet and Nick Wainwright added the conversion.
