![]() MacDougall takes his turn to score a try
By BBC Sport Online's Phil Gordos in Hull
Australia 110-4 Russia Ryan Girdler set a new world points record as Australia ran in 19 tries against minnows Russia. The flying centre grabbed three for himself and landed a staggering 17 goals to chalk up a personal haul of 46 points in this one-sided contest at the Boulevard in Hull. There was also four tries for Wendell Sailor, plus two each for Jason Croker, Trent Barrett and substitute Nathan Hindmarsh. Also on the try trail were Adam MacDougall, Matt Gidley, Shane Webcke, Andrew Johns, Gorden Tallis and Bryan Fletcher. There was some consolation for Russia in the form of Matthew Donovan, who received the try-of-the-match award for his 19th-minute score.
Roustem Garifoullin fell victim to one particularly big hit inside the first 10 minutes and was eventually forced to leave the field after failing to recover. By then, the tournament favourites were 12-0 in front thanks to tries from Girdler and McDougall. They doubled their lead before Russia drew the biggest cheer of the night when Donovan got on the end of a defence-splitting kick to touch down in the corner. The Western Suburbs winger was quickly mobbed by his ecstatic team-mates, who recognised he significance of scoring against the world champions. Australia were clearly miffed and promptly ran in another five tries before the break to make the half-time score 50-4. The onslaught continued after the interval, with Tallis's side running in another 10 tries to totally blitz the Russians, who head home having lost all their games in the tournament. Australia: MacDougall, Croker, Girdler, Gidley, Sailor, Barrett, Kimmorley, Webcke, Johns, Kearns, Tallis, Fletcher, Hill. Subs: Gower, Hindmarsh, Vella, Kennedy. Russia: Mitrofanov, Donovan, Romanov, Iliassov, Shamsoutdinov, Olari, Gavrilin, Rubin, Lysenkov, Campbell, Doulemin, Garifoullin, Rullis. Subs: Kalashkin, Giorgas, Kouchumov, Artaskin.
