Former Great Britain scrum-half Paul Deacon has signed a new one-year playing contract with Super League champions Wigan Warriors.

The 31-year-old will then take on his duties as an assistant coach at the DW Stadium until 2014.

Head coach Michael Maguire said: "We are pleased that Paul will be able to play on next season.

"He is a superb organiser in the middle of the park for us and his experience is invaluable to the team."

He added: "Paul was always keen to play on and he will be an integral part of the side for 2011."

Deacon joined Wigan from Bradford as an assistant coach last November and had planned to join the coaching staff full time at the end of the 2010 season.

He made 20 appearances for the Warriors, scoring one try, as they won both the League Leaders' Shield and the Grand Final.

And he said the chance to build on that success before hanging up his boots was too good an opportunity to turn down.

"I thoroughly enjoyed last season and to win the Grand Final with your hometown club was a very special moment for me," said Deacon.

"It was always in my mind, if possible, to continue playing and I am thrilled I have been given the opportunity next season by Michael and the club.

"You are a long time not playing once you decide to hang up your boots and I am really looking forward to helping the team build on the success of 2010.

"It was agreed when I arrived last year that once I stopped playing I would move into the role as an assistant coach and that is something I will be able to concentrate on from the end of 2011."
