Wakefield plan to honour Watene

Wakefield pay tribute to 'champion' Watene

Wakefield Wildcats coach John Kear has revealed the club are planning a "lasting tribute" to forward Adam Watene, who died suddenly on Monday.

The Cook Islands international, 31, died after collapsing during training.

And Kear told BBC Radio Leeds: "We need to put something in place so that we can thank Adam for all he's done for club and the West Yorkshire community.

"We are still all absolutely shocked and deeply saddened by Adam's death. As a club we plan to honour his memory."

Watene joined the Wildcats after spells at Castleford Tigers and Bradford Bulls and quickly established himself as a key - and popular - part of the squad.

His extensive work in the wider community of Wakefield off the field - with his tireless involvement in the Wildcats Community Programmes and his role as Deputy Mayor of Wakefield's Consort - also marked him out as a special Wildcats player.

"Adam was a leader on and off the pitch for us and we have lost not only a fantastic player but a true gentleman in every sense of the word," said Kear.

"Adam was very much a family man, and we are immensely sad that his wife Moana has lost a devoted husband and his children their doting father."

The club has set up The Adam Watene Fund in order to assist his family.
