St Helens' Kyle Eastmond may miss rest of season

St Helens fear half-back Kyle Eastmond could miss the rest of the season after suffering an ankle injury.

The 20-year-old limped out of Saints' defeat by Leeds on Saturday, a game that marked his comeback after a month out with an injury to the same ankle.

Eastmond will visit a specialist to see if he requires surgery that could rule him out for up to three months.

If so, he would also miss England's Four Nations tour of New Zealand and Australia in October and November.

"When you look at the video it is a freakish injury," said Saints coach Mick Potter. "He half got through a hole and the tackling player's hip landed on his ankle.

"Kyle will see a specialist over the next day or so who will manipulate it under anaesthetic to see how strong it is.

"It could be four to six weeks at best but the season at worst if it needs surgery."

Eastmond first damaged the ligaments in his ankle in June, after going over on it during Saints' 32-12 Challenge Cup quarter-final win over Barrow.

As a result, he missed a month of action, which included England's 60-6 mid-season international friendly victory over France.

At the time he was second in the Super League scoring charts with 13 tries and 69 goals.

Meanwhile, Saints are hopeful that stand-off Leon Pryce, who also failed to finish Saturday's loss to Leeds, will be fit for Friday's Super League game at home to Catalan Dragons.

Pryce suffered a back spasm during the game at Headingley and Potter explained: "He would like to play this week, but it depends on whether the doctor is happy.

"Leon wants to play but he needs to be 100% right."

However, captain Keiron Cunningham - playing in his farewell season in the sport - has a foot injury which is likely to keep him sidelined, where he is joined by forward Andrew Dixon (groin), Bryn Hargreaves (bicep), Jon Wilkin (shoulder), Sia Soliola (knee) and Maurie Fa'asavalu (shoulder).

"I haven't seen an injury situation like this since perhaps the late 80s in Canterbury when three grades had injuries," added Potter. "But it's a contact sport and it's the nature of the game."
