Gidley extends stay with Saints

Matt Gidley
Gidley is currently enjoying his third season with St Helens

St Helens centre Matt Gidley has signed a new one-year contract that will keep him at the club until 2010.

The 31-year-old Australian international joined Saints from Newcastle Knights in 2006.

"I have more than enjoyed my three seasons at St Helens and it is great to commit to a fourth," said Gidley.

"We have a fantastic blend of experience and talented youth and are well placed to continue our record of success in Super League."

Gidley joins stand-off Gary Wheeler by extending his stay at Saints in recent weeks along with youngsters Andrew Dixon and Matty Ashurst.

This is great news as Matt remains one of the top strike centres in the game

St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus added: "This is great news as Matt remains one of the top strike centres in the game.

"He is also a great clubman and a very positive influence on the promising young outside backs who are rapidly establishing themselves as first-team regulars.

"It is good news all around."
