Wilkinson is still optimistic the Barton project will go ahead
Salford chairman John Wilkinson admits delays over the proposed stadium have proved more difficult than anticipated.
Wilkinson has come under fire after the Rugby Football League threatened them with expulsion from the Super League when their license runs out in 2012.
He told BBC Radio Manchester: "It's been one of the hardest things I've ever taken on in my lifetime.
"I wish we could have gone quicker. But at the end of it what we will deliver will be really appreciated."
"You couldn't really re-develop The Willows because we're constrained," the City Reds supremo continued.
"It's a stadium that is referred to as wrapped round with terraced houses and of course it is 108 years old in December.
I don't think there is a better site in the city of Salford because we would have identified it
Salford chairman John Wilkinson
"That is how stadiums were built at that time when people walked to games. Things have certainly changed.
"We haven't got the car parking round here. We've not got the facilities that families expect today.
"They want to be in new stadiums and our stadium is not good. We've got to really look to the future and I don't think there is a better site in the city of Salford because we would have identified it."
