Leeds Rhinos appoint Damian Gibson to coaching staff

Former Leeds and Wales international Damian Gibson has returned to Headingley to join the coaching staff.

Gibson, who played for Leeds in 1997, will work both as the club's Under-20 coach and with the first team.

"I'm excited about my role here," said the 35-year-old Australian, who first came to England when he joined Leeds from North Queensland Cowboys.

"I enjoy being at the grassroots. It is something I have experience of and the Leeds Rugby Foundation do a great job."

Queensland-born Gibson went on to have spells in Super League with Halifax, Salford and Castleford before returning to finish his career at The Shay.

He has also been assistant coach for the past two years with the Welsh national team, for whom he won 15 caps, during which time he has also coached Leeds' Under-18s.

The Rhinos have also confirmed that former Head of Youth Conditioning Richard Hunwicks has been promoted to the full-time staff in a newly created position of assistant conditioner, working under Jason Davidson.

Gibson is the second former Leeds player brought back to the club by new head coach Brian McDermott, following James Lowes' move from Tony Smith's staff at Warrington.

McClennan left in late October, followed by coaches Francis Cummins and Willie Poching, who have since gone to Bradford and Warrington respectively.
