Hull KR face fine over accounts

Neil Hudgell
Hudgell is hoping to name a new sponsor in two weeks time

Hull KR are to be fined by Companies House for failing to deliver their annual accounts before the 30 September deadline, BBC Look North reports.

Chairman Neil Hudgell told the club website that there were reasons behind the delay in their payment.

He blamed "tax write offs" and a "review of image right payments" and went on to claim other Super League clubs were in the same position.

It follows a successful year after Rovers finished fourth in the table.

Responding via a moderated question and answer session Hudgell explained: "[There are] two reasons for the accounts being filed late. Firstly, there are some tax write offs to be approved by the revenue.

"Secondly, there is a game wide revenue review into image rights payments, primarily to overseas players."

The chairman also used the forum to reveal that the club had a major sponsor in place.

He said: "We have a new major sponsor and that deal with be launched in the next two weeks."

Mr Hudgell said that the club needed to be playing in front of average crowds of around 10,000 to be able to pay the maximum allowed under the salary cap.

Craig Spence of the Rugby Football League said: "The problem the clubs are facing is that they are struggling for sponsorship.

"What used to be local companies coming in sponsoring players or shirts sponsorship, that's where the clubs are noticing a drop off."

He added: "What they have benefitted from is that more money than ever coming in from the RFL and Super League, so we're doing our bit for the clubs."
