Crusaders complete Chan signing

Super League newcomers Celtic Crusaders have unveiled Papua New Guinean international Jason Chan as their 10th close-season signing.

The second row forward, 24, featured in all three of the Kumuls' World Cup matches last year scoring one try.

Chan has been playing his club rugby with Windsor Wolves, the feeder club to National Rugby League side Penrith Panthers in Australia.

Crusaders coach John Dixon said: "Jason is a welcome addition to our squad."

Chan scored 16 tries and kicked 64 goals in 47 appearances for the Wolves, helping them lift the Jim Beam Cup last season.

He joined up with the Crusaders on their three-week Australian training camp last month.

"He will add speed and power to our forward pack," added Dixon.

And Papua New Guinea captain John Wilshire thinks that this move will be good for Chan.

"I think he was probably our best forward in the World Cup," said Wilshire.

"He played really well against all three of our opponents, and he impressed our coach Adrian Lam throughout the tournament.

"He did really well coming from the Jim Beam Cup to play so well in the World Cup. I'm sure he will do very well for the Crusaders."

The Crusaders kick off their Super League campaign away to Leeds Rhinos on Friday, 6 February (2000 GMT).
