Castleford Tigers could be without Brent Sherwin for the start of Super League XIV.
The 30-year-old Australian half-back is still recovering from an operation on his foot.
Head coach Terry Matterson told BBC Radio Leeds: "It's a race against time for Brent.
"It's important we get him right this year. He was never fully fit last year and we kept bring him back too early. I won't make that mistake this year."
Other than Sherwin, Matterson has reported a full bill of health as Castleford look to improve on last season's bottom-place finish.
Matterson added: "He needs to be fit and his body needs to be in shape to be able to do what we need him to do.
"When Brent is fully fit he is as good as any other half-back in the competition and we never got an opportunity to see that last season
"We have two friendlies to get through and currently only Brent is a doubt, the others are all fit."
