Wigan secured their first Super League Leaders Shield with a second-half comeback to end Hull KR's four-month unbeaten run at Craven Park.

Wigan outplayed the Robins to take a 14-0 first-half lead through tries by Stefan Marsh and Pat Richards.

KR put on 18 unanswered points after the break as Scott Murrell, Matt Cook and Rhys Lovegrove crossed the line.

But Wigan hit back with tries from Sam and Joel Tomkins, Richards and debutant Josh Charnley.

Rovers started well when centre Ben Cockayne crossed the line inside two minutes after following up a Murrell kick but referee Ben Thaler ruled the ball had not been grounded.

Shortly after that Richards struck with his first try, which he converted, made by Sam Tomkins' break down the right.

Richards had another successful shot at goal from a penalty after a play-the-ball offence by the hosts.

Another Wigan penalty ended with Marsh going over in the right corner shortly after but this time Richards was off target for the conversion.

Richards made up for it when he slotted a further penalty awarded when Michael Dobson brought Sam Tomkins down illegally after his promising break.

The Robins started the second half in blistering fashion as they put on 18 points inside the first 10 minutes to take the lead 18-14.

Murrell barrelled his way over in the 42nd minute and Dobson added the extras.

Ben Fisher was the provider for Cook three minutes later, again converted, before Lovegrove put Rovers in front and Dobson made in three from three with the boot.

But the league leaders hit back through the Tomkins brothers as Sam crossed the whitewash after Joel was allowed to play on after some Rovers players thought he had been tackled.

Richards converted his second try of the afternoon and Joel Tomkins' score after he jogged over the line with four minutes left.

That was just enough time for Charnley to score against his loan side before Richards added the conversion to secure Wigan's first leaders shield since 2000.

Wigan coach Michael Maguire:
"For 20 minutes in the second half we lost our way and could not get the ball back.

"We put pressure on ourselves and I thought the side showed great strength in getting back to what was needed.

"The first half was a bit special and we wanted to do the same for the second period but we had that setback."

Hull KR head coach Justin Morgan:
"Lack of ball control cost us in the first half and I think we kicked the ball dead more times than we have for a long time.

"The second half was encouraging, we picked ourselves up and there were some decent signs for us, but we were not good enough to get the points in the end.

"After the break I think we had the ball for 12 minutes out of 15 and they are a good side. They are a good side defensively and we scored three good tries against them.

"We gave them a good challenge and I have to send my congratulations to them on taking the League Leaders' trophy, although it is disappointing it happened on our patch."
