St Helens ran in six tries to all but end Harlequins' hopes of a Super League play-off place.

Tries from Shaun Magennis, Paul Wellens and Francis Meli cancelled out Jason Golden's effort for Quins in the first half to give Saints a comfortable lead.

The visitors hit back after the break, as Jamie O'Callaghan and Ryan Esders crossed over to give Quins hope.

But Chris Dean went over to extend St Helens' lead and Wellens added his second to seal the win.

Saints were looking to bounce back from successive defeats by Leeds and Catalans and it took them just eight minutes to cross over through 20-year-old Magennis, on his full debut for Mick Potter's side.

Magennis, who has been sidelined for over a year with a serious knee injury, recorded his first senior try when Scott Moore's pass sent him plunging over.

But Quins fought back with a well-worked touchdown - Tony Clubb releasing the ball for Jason Golden to go over and Danny Orr booting the conversion but their lead did not last long as Meli broke loose to run over for his first. Jonny Lomax was off target with his second conversion and was then denied a try by a solid Quins defence.

Clubb stopped a certain try with a tackle on James Roby but his good work was undone when O'Callaghan failed to deal with Moore's kick and Wellens took the try with Lomax booting his first conversion to make it 14-6.

Meli's power brought him his second brace in as many games and it was goaled by Lomax, to give Saints a comfortable 20-6 half-time advantage.

Quins, despite losing Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook with a leg injury, gave themselves some hope with two converted tries as Saints struggled to find their stride.

Orr's long pass put O'Callaghan over in the corner and Esders went over from short range to close the gap.

Saints could breathe easier after 66 minutes when Chris Dean pounced on a loose ball with Lomax's conversion easing the nerves at 26-18.

The win was guaranteed with Pryce putting Wellens over for his second try five minutes from time, to leave the visitors languishing in 13th place in the league.

St Helens boss Mick Potter:
"Shaun is a player for the future. He has had a hard 18 months with a knee problem but showed he can mix it up in Super League.

"[The team performance] was a mixed bag. There were errors from both teams but it was a competitive match for the crowd.

"We were our own worst enemy at times."

Harlequins coach Brian McDermott:
"It was a very brave effort and I have never been more proud of my players.

"We had a real big dig and there were some excellent performances.

"Tony Clubb has been playing like that for a long time and Andy Ellis was outstanding.

"Olsi Krasniqi went well for a young bloke and did not make too many errors. Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook suffered a dead leg and bravely went back out there but clearly was not the same."
